How do you motivate yourself to learn English?
Can I ask you a question?
How long have you been ‘wanting’ to speak English?
I know – maybe you don’t want to answer this question – but please tell me:
How many months – or how many years…
Have you wanted to speak English?
If you want to speak English…
And you still don’t speak English…
Then you feel frustrated.
Maybe you make plans to improve your English speaking…
But then you give up.
You said you wanted this.
But then you stopped.
If you ‘stop’ again and again… you will start to hate yourself!!!
How do I know this?
Because I’ve done this to myself! [em face]
Please… My friend…
Don’t waste your time ‘wanting’ to speak English.
If you say you ‘want’ something, take action!
If you don’t take action to learn to speak English…
You start to doubt yourself.
Don’t do this.
If you really want to speak English – then start to speak English!
Whatever it takes! Whatever is necesary!
Or – don’t ‘want’ to speak English.
If you only ‘want’ it, then you won’t get it.
You have to want to speak English – and take action to speak English!
One thing that can ‘stop’ you from speaking English is:
Maybe you think that you don’t have the ‘ability’ or ‘talent’ to speak English.
But I want to tell you:
YES YOU CAN learn to speak English fluently!
YES YOU CAN learn to understand more English!
YES YOU CAN speak English confidently in business and social situations.
You just have to find your own ‘English learning and speaking ability’
When you find your own ability, you can start speaking English more fluently.
What kills your motivation to learn English?
The biggest thing that kills your motivation to learn English is the belief that you can’t do it. That’s what stops you.
In fact, there is nothing else stopping you.
If you believed you could actually do it – and if you believed that there was a big enough benefit, you would do whatever it takes to learn to speak English.
Even if you had to work really hard…
Even if you had to invest a significant amount of time and/or finances…
You would do it.
You would do it because you really want the benefit.
But right now, you don’t believe that it’s possible. You don’t believe that you can do it.
Or you don’t really want the result. Maybe some part of you is scared of the result. Or you just don’t want the result. Maybe speaking English is not that important to you.
And so – this constant ‘wanting’ but not ‘having’ disturbs you. It makes you feel bad. It makes you feel like you’re ‘not enough’.
But if you asked me: ‘Ian, am I enough? Is it possible for me to speak English?’
I would say, “YES!”
“YES YOU CAN”
You can do this! It’s not always easy… but it’s 100% doable! (doable = possible to do)
You can do it.
And you can probably do it faster than you think. (and with more fun!)
The ‘Secret’ is…
A change in mindset.
I met a guy last week. He was talking about running his first marathon – 26.2 miles. That’s 41.92 kilometers.
He’s 40 years old. He told me there were runners half his age – they had to carry them out on stretchers.
Someone asked him what his ‘secret’ was… He said:
If you believe you can do it, you will keep going. You will do it.
It reminded me of this video on motivation from BigThink.
In the video, Jesse Itzler explains how… When we thing we’ve given 100%, we’ve really only given 40% of our capacity.
That. Is. Amazing.
Think of your ‘biggest achievement’ in life. No matter how big you achievement was… you can do more.
You are more capable and talented than you realize.
It’s ok if you’ve been struggling recently.
This last September, I moved my family from Turkey back to America. We had to get used to living in the US. My Dad died in October. A lot of difficult things have happened.
But I’m still here. I’m still driving towards my goal. I’m still focused on helping my family, helping my students and clients,
And (my long-term goal):
Helping the world by helping more people speak English so that they communicate with each other and live in peace.
Some people asked me if I came to the US because of the ‘political tension’ in Turkey.
I said no… We came to America for the opportunities.
Last year, our daughter tested as ‘highly gifted’. She was already reading and writing in two languages at age 4 – and we asked ourselves: “Where are we going to send her to school in Istanbul?”
In Istanbul, we found ‘one’ school for gifted kids. In Chicago, there are more than 12. And they’re free, public schools.
If my daughter didn’t speak English, she couldn’t go to school in America.
If my family didn’t speak English, it would be very hard to live in the US.
If I didn’t speak English, I wouldn’t be able to have my business and support my family.
If I didn’t speak English, I wouldn’t be able to read so many books.
If my wife and I didn’t speak English, we wouldn’t be able to travel comfortably and meet new people from different countries.
Speaking English is one of the most valuable skills on the planet.
And – you can have this skill – if only you want it and believe you can do it.
